CAKEHOLE

MediumPerformance (play)

CAKEHOLE is a performance and an outlandish ceremony, gameshow, karaoke, and oral history: a play that is an oral history that is a clown that looks like a cake. I conceived it with Philip Errico and Thea Riven to celebrate Hex House turning exactly 365 days old. It is a love letter to the people who make this surreal and statistically improbable story real, and the first play I've written, directed, and performed in.

The evening unfolded in many acts. A gameshow prize was revealed as a check that was also a hospital bill for Hex's birth, that was also the space's open finances, that was also a ribbon-cutting ceremony whose scissors were a car dressed as a cake. Thea emerged from a song cake, I emerged from a car cake, Philip hosted, and the audience became a choir, singing happy birthday three times to three different cakes.

There were five cakes in all, rising and falling in scale. The fourth consumed me as I consumed it, swallowing raw egg and milk until I became one with its floury interior. The fifth was two hundred cupcakes, handed out to the crowd.

Before and an audience of 300, CAKEHOLE was a ritual coming together, a carnival reckoning, once in a lifetime.
